Eddie took good care of all the clients and his knowledge of Beijing is similar to an encyclopedia!

Shanghai, on the Yangtze River delta, has a long history as a gateway to China. It is the largest economic and trade hub in China, and one of the centres of China’s modern culture and media. This Morning we walk along the famous Bund, a mile-long stretch along the Huangpu River. Lined by colonial architecture of European design, this is the best place to capture the western influences of Old Shanghai. Continue to the Old Town which is a perfect combination of gardens, temples, old architecture, local culture, souvenir businesses, and food. After a welcome dumpling lunch you may take a relaxing Huangpu River Cruise tour (optional), before visiting a silk spinning mill and learning how silk is created from mulberry-munching silkworms to produce the finest thread and cloth. Optional show: ERA – Intersection of Time. See a captivating combination of Chinese history, mesmerizing martial arts, and incredible special effects throughout the unique spectacle.
Enjoy a free day to explore Shanghai at your own pace. Optional Tour: Shanghai Museum & Xintiandi Area – Visit the Shanghai Museum to see ancient Chinese art, furniture, and jade. Then explore the Xintiandi Area, a modern and fashionable district that also displays traditional Shanghai architecture. In the Afternoon, experience the high-speed train to Beijing. Travelling at up to 300km/h, the expanding high-speed rail network is the world’s largest and a testament to China’s desire to be a technological powerhouse.
Begin this morning with a visit to Tiananmen Square, the second largest public square in the world. The square is named after the Tiananmen (Gate of Heavenly Peace), the gate of the Forbidden City located to its north. The square contains the Monument to the People’s Heroes and has great cultural significance as it was the site of several important events in Chinese history. Then, visit a Chinese herbal institute to learn about traditional Chinese medicine, which has existed for thousands of years, as you enjoy a rejuvenating foot massage. After, continue on to the incredible Forbidden City, which was the Chinese imperial palace from the Ming to the Qing dynasty, the years 1420 to 1912. The complex consists of 980 buildings and was declared a World Heritage Site in 1987. It is listed by UNESCO as the largest collection of preserved ancient wooden structures in the world. Optional Peking Duck Dinner: Tonight, head out for one of the most famous Chinese dishes and a speciality of Beijing, Peking Duck.
Today’s highlight is an excursion to the majestic Great Wall at Juyong Pass. 60 km from downtown Beijing, Juyong Pass was a solid stronghold encircling a valley, which was the northern direct access to Beijing in ancient times. Once here, there will be plenty of time to learn about the wall’s construction. You will be given the chance to climb a portion of this 3,700-mile marvel. Return to Beijing and stop at one of the largest jade exhibitions in Asia en-route. Then, after lunch, see skilled artisans at work at a cloisonné factory. Cloisonné is a famous traditional enamel ware, with a history of over 500 years. Optional Tour Show: The Golden Mask Dynasty, the show incorporates dancing, acrobatics, some magnificent costumes and one or two surprises. Seen by an estimated of 1.1 million people, it is one of Beijing’s must-see shows.

NOTE: For travellers who choose to join the optional mid-tour extension package to see Xi’an and the Terracotta Warriors, you will instead fly to Xi’an, spending two nights, and then on to Shanghai.

Enjoy a free day to explore Beijing at your own pace. Beijing has something for everyone, from rich culture, to gourmet food, to some of the best shopping in the world. Optional Summer Palace & Beijing Zoo Tour: Enjoy a tour to the Summer Palace, the largest preserved ancient garden in China and a former summer resort for Emperors followed by the Beijing Zoo to see China’s adorable national treasure – the Giant Panda. Optional Hutong Life Tour: A rickshaw will take you around the intricate winding hutongs to admire these traditional courtyard houses. Even today, many residents are reluctant to move from their beloved hutongs, and many have been renovated into boutiques, tea houses, and restaurants. You’ll be invited to visit a local family’s house to experience authentic old Beijing life.

After breakfast, you will be transferred to Beijing Airport this afternoon to board your homebound flight to Australia via an intermediate city.

This morning, fly to Xi’an, the first Chinese city to open its doors to the world, during the Tang dynasty, and the capital for eleven dynasties over a period of more than 2,000 years. Visit the fascinating Shaanxi Provincial Museum. Enjoy lunch, featuring a special noodle-making demonstration, before a visit to the Ancient City Wall, the most complete ancient city wall surviving in China. Later, visit the Great Wild Goose Pagoda, the symbol of the city.
The highlight today is a visit to the Terracotta Army to see the life-sized defending army of the first emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang. This site is among the top archaeological excavations of the 20th century. This will be followed by a visit to a ceramic art factory. In the evening, enjoy a special Imperial Dumpling Banquet and traditional Tang Dynasty Singing & Dancing Show.
Fly to Shanghai – the modern metropolis and commercial centre of China. This morning we visit a silk spinning mill and learn how silk is created by mulberry-munching silkworms to produce the nest thread and cloth. Then we walk along the famous Bund, a mile-long stretch along the Huangpu River. The luxurious President 7 is a newly-constructed ship of modern design and construction technique. It first sailed on the Yangtze River in April of 2013.
