Chiang Mai Stopover Holiday 4 Days

$692.00

Northern Thailand, in the famous Thai phrase, is 'same-same but different' from the world of Bangkok and the the central plains, from the 'Lao' Northeast, and from the steamy south. With a cooler climate, mountainous terrain, and a diverse population of minority 'hill tribe' communities, the region that was once an independent kingdom known as Lan Na ('One Million Rice Fields') has it's own distinctive place in the Southeast Asian mosaic. From rivalry with Central Thai Ayutthaya, to domination by the Burmese, to eventual absorption into modern Thailand, the North has retained its characteristic differences and diversity. You'll taste different flavours, see different architecture, and hear different languages as you explore the cities and cultures of Thailand's mountainous north.

Highlights:
  • Enjoy sweeping views of Chiang Mai – the 'capital of the North' – from Wat Doi Suthep temple
  • Marvel the modern architectural wonder of 'the White Temple' – Wat Rong Khun in Chiang Rai
  • Wander among the fascinating buildings, decor, and art installations of the unique Black Village
  • Visit the Opium Museum at the Golden Triangle area where the borders of Thailand, Burma and Laos meet

Chiang Mai
After breakfast and enjoying the morning free at leisure, we travel to Wat Doi Suthep. This temple that sits at 1,073m on the slopes of Mount Suthep. Built in 1383 during the Lanna Thai period, legend has it that the temple site was auspiciously chosen by an elephant that upon reaching the spot, trumpeted, circled three times, knelt down and then died. Explore the extensive grounds and enjoy the sweeping views of Chiang Mai and the surrounding countryside from the temple.
Wat Doi Suthep
Drive northwards to Chiang Rai. After lunch, visit Chiang Rai’s popular ‘White Temple’ – Wat Rong Khun. This unconventional Buddhist temple was designed by the visual artist and painter, Chalermchai Kositpipat, using the colour white to symbolise the purity and sacredness of the temple. Proceed to Baan Dam, created by Thawan Duchanee, a titled National Artist of Thailand until his 2014 death. Usually translated as ‘Black House’ this is more like a themepark consisting of around 40 buildings, with unique exhibits and unique art installations. Next, we visit the Golden Triangle area where the borders of Thailand, Burma and Laos meet. This tri-border region used to be the center of opium production and trade in South East Asia. Learn more about this area at the Opium Museum and the old city of Chiang Saen, before returning to Chiang Mai and your hotel.
