Fly to San Francisco via connecting cities. On arrival in San Francisco, our tour guide will meet you at the airport transfer you to your hotel. The rest of the day is free at leisure.
In the morning, take a look at San Francisco, a hilly city surrounded by water on 3 sides. Then visit the Golden Gate Bridge. Opened in 1937, the bridge is still the tallest in the United States, and remains an international icon. Next, visit Fisherman’s Wharf, a popular ‘San Fran’ attraction, famous for crab and clam chowder served in a ‘bowl’ of sourdough bread. Here you can take an optional cruise on San Francisco Bay. Next, visit super-steep Lombard Street, or the Exploratorium – an experiential ‘museum’ of science, art, and human perception. With around 600 installations on show, it has been described as “a mad scientist’s penny arcade, a scientific funhouse, and an experimental laboratory all rolled into one”. To end the day’s tour, we visit the only building remaining from the 1915 World Exposition, the Palace of Fine Arts – a beautiful ‘ruined’ building in an atmospheric setting, inspired by Greek and Roman architecture (look out for the stand of Australian eucalyptus trees!).
Today we’ll visit vineyards located in California’s famed Napa Valley – a world-renowned region for winemaking. Wine tasting is available (at your own expense). The tour usually ends at 5:00 pm, but there could be delays caused by traffic, weather, or other circumstances. Usually two wineries will be visited – Robert Mondavi Winery and Bringers Vineyards, however this is subject to change, so please confirm with the tour guide on the day.
Today we go to Santa Barbara, where Spanish colonial architecture is fused with modern details, giving the city a casual elegance. Visit a Spanish Mission and learn how these religious outposts were key to the development of the region. Continue on to Solvang, a quaint community established by Danish immigrants, to browse in the local shops. Brilliant sunshine, boundless open country and rolling hills are why the original settlers called this place ‘Sunny Field’. Pour yourself a cup of aromatic European-style coffee and tuck into a delicious Danish pastry.
Los Angeles city tour: Grauman’s Chinese Theatre and the Staples Centre – experience movie magic at it’s best! Optional tour: Universal Studios, which offers the Hollywood experience through amazing attractions and behind-the-scenes exclusives!
Leave Los Angeles in the morning, and drive along the beautiful coast of southern California to San Diego, a beautiful seaport city in southern California. In San Diego, visit the port and view the world-famous bustling home of the United States Navy’s Seventh Fleet. Then, visit one of the earliest public parks in the United States – Balboa Park, which hosted the World Expo in 1915. The park has 15 major museums, and often hosts plays, musicals, and all kinds of big events. Balboa Park was registered as a national historic landmark in 1977. This region is considered ‘the birthplace of California’. It was here in 1769 that Father Junipero Serra came to establish the first of 21 missions that became the cornerstones of the state. Today, Old Town San Diego still preserves its rich heritage from the period of 1821-1871. In the evening, return to Los Angeles, ending our one-day tour of San Diego’s rich culture and history.
On leaving Los Angeles, we’ll stop by a factory outlet on the way to Las Vegas, the gambling capital of the world. You will stay at a hotel located right in the thick of the action along the Las Vegas Strip, with famous attractions such as the ‘glass pyramid’ Luxor Hotel, New York New York, Treasure Island, and Mirage all within walking distance. You may also join an optional night tour or see the best-selling showgirl production ‘Jubilee’.
Depart Las Vegas in the morning and proceed to Grand Canyon West. There you will have the option of stepping onto the world-famous Skywalk, suspended 4,000 feet above the Colorado River. This 30-million dollar bridge affords sweeping views of the canyon below. Back in Las Vegas, you may also join an optional tour of the city after dark, with stops at famous casinos on both ends of the Strip. NOTE: Grand Canyon West is NOT part of Grand Canyon National Park. Grand Canyon West is located within the Hualapai American Indian Reservation and is owned and operated by the Hualapai Tribe.
Depart for home from Las Vegas Airport.
Arrive back in Australia.
